So by now, everyone has seen Netfilx’s new series, “Tidying Up With Marie Kondo.” I first read Kondo’s book in May 2015 and slowly went through the process of tidying my home, starting with clothing. I’m not sure how much further I made it in the process, but I loved having my drawers full of nicely folded clothes and it was so easy to pick out something to wear!
I followed Kondo’s advice and pulled out all of my clothes, piled them on my bed, and went through them one by one, deciding which ones sparked joy and letting the other ones go (but not before saying “Thank you!”). Once I got started, the process got a lot easier. And it made me enjoy the clothes that I kept all that more.
I also sorted my son’s clothes (who was two at the time) and started storing them vertically, as per Kondo’s book. He was just starting to assert his independence and loved pulling out all of his clothes to find exactly what he wanted to wear. But by storing his clothes standing up, he was able to easily see what was in his drawer and pull them out with no trouble. And I was so happy to have eliminated the clothes all over the floor!
Fast forward to January 2017 when I started the process again, this time with a new baby tagging along! During the second round, I went through my clothes (again) and went through books, papers, and then ventured into the kimono section which included tidying kids’ toys and our kitchen.
Then we moved to a new house and everything got put on hold again. Fast forward to January 2019 and it’s time to start again (but without any new babies!).
This time around, I don’t really feel there’s much to do in terms of my own clothing. I have such a small amount now that I own, in part due to downsizing from my husband and I each having our own dresser and closet to just one dresser and closet for us to share. So I’ll share some photos of my organized clothing, as well as video I made about part of the clothing process, while I motivate myself to address the closet in the guest room that is full of baby clothes.
